Xi Urges U.S. to Honor Its Promises in Call with Trump

Xinhua News Agency, The China Academy, February 5, 2026 —

China’s official report of the call offers a glimpse of what truly matters to the country: mutual respect and Taiwan.

On the evening of February 4, President Xi Jinping spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump by phone.

Xi Jinping pointed out that over the past year, we have maintained good communication, successfully met in Busan, and steered the China–U.S. relationship, which has been welcomed by the peoples of both countries and the international community. I attach great importance to China–U.S. relations. In the new year, I am willing to continue leading this “large ship” of China–U.S. relations with you through storms, keeping it steady, and accomplishing more significant and positive things. The U.S. has its concerns, and China has its concerns. China speaks with credibility and acts with determination; we follow through on what we say. As long as both sides approach each other with equality, respect, and reciprocity, we can find ways to address each other’s concerns.

This year, both China and the U.S. have many important agendas. China will launch the “15th Five-Year Plan,” and the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding. Both countries will host, respectively, the APEC informal leaders’ meeting and the G20 leaders’ summit. Both sides should, in accordance with our consensus, strengthen dialogue and communication, properly manage differences, expand practical cooperation, not dismiss small acts of goodness, not commit even small acts of wrongdoing, and handle matters one by one—continuously building mutual trust and charting a proper path of interaction—so that 2026 can become a year in which the two major powers move toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

Xi Jinping emphasized that the Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China–U.S. relations. Taiwan is Chinese territory, and China must safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Taiwan can never be allowed to split from China. The U.S. must handle arms sales to Taiwan with caution.

Trump stated that both the United States and China are great countries, and the China–U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. I have a great relationship with President Xi, and I respect him greatly. Under our leadership, China and the U.S. have had good interactions in areas such as trade and the economy. I welcome China’s success, and the U.S. is willing to strengthen cooperation with China to promote new developments in our bilateral relations. I value China’s concerns regarding the Taiwan issue and am willing to maintain communication with China to keep China–U.S. relations stable and healthy during my term.
